Public transport owners are allowed to update documents of their vehicles by paying fees for fitness, driving licence, tax token and route permit by June 30.

In a gazette notification issued on February 05, road transport and bridges ministry allowed renewal of transport papers by the deadline.

Otherwise, the owners must pay fines to get things done after June 30.

The special facility, given following finance ministry's approval, would not be applicable to any defaulter after June, reads the notification.

Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) director Lokman Hossain Molla said the facility has been given on request from transport owners and operators as thousands of vehicles are running without documents.

The BRTA fines 150 per cent of the fees and tax token each year if an operator fails to update his papers.

Transport owners and operators felt the necessity to renew papers after the Road Transport Act 2018 took effect from November 01, 2019.

The law provides for different kinds of punishments, including fines.

Bangladesh Road Transport Owners Association leader Khandaker Enayetullah welcomed the government's initiative and said the association has already asked stakeholders to avail this opportunity.

He, however, could not give any data on the total number of such delinquent vehicles but said the number was quite high.
