Two die in 'gunfight' with police in Dhaka

Two people have died in an alleged gunfight with police in Dhaka's Aftabnagar.

The incident took place at the dawn of Thursday, police say.

Acting on a tip-off, Mashiur Rahman, deputy commissioner of Detective Branch (DB) of police, said a team of them intercepted a microbus around 4:30 am in the area.

The miscreants inside the microbus fired at them, triggering a gunfight, leaving two of the miscreants critically injured, he said.

The injured were rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared them dead, Rahman added.

The dead were identified as Tarzan Manir and Shah Ali, of whom the latter is accused in murder of a private car driver in Badda earlier this month, local media reports say.

The senior DB officer said they also detained two others from the microbus, including its driver.

Along with a recovery of four pistols, 16 round of bullets, 50 kg of hemps from the microbus, the vehicle has been seized, he said.

The bodies have been have been kept in the DMCH morgue for autopsy.
