Two sedition cases have been filed against Priya Saha, a leader of a minority group, for maligning Bangladesh's image by making false complaints to US President Donald Trump.
Supreme Court lawyer and International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) prosecutor Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Suman filed the first case against Saha, an organising secretary of the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ziaur Rahman.
The court has recorded deposition of the plaintiff and is scheduled to pass order in this regard later.
Dhaka Bar Council executive committee member Advocate Ibrahim Khalil filed the second case with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Sufian and the court is scheduled to hear the plea later in the day.
Both the plaintiffs pleaded to take into cognisance the charges against her under section 123 (a), 124 (a), and 500 of the penal code, BSS reports.
Saha made the false allegations of persecution of minority communities in Bangladesh to President Trump while participating in the Second Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom held at the US Department of State in Washington, DC from July 16 to 18.
Bangladesh government on July 20 termed her allegations as ‘blatant lies’ and condemned her remarks in the strongest possible terms.
Condemning her remarks in strongest language, the foreign ministry in a press release said there was an ulterior motive behind Saha’s absolutely false and concocted stories aimed at maligning Bangladesh.
