Transparency International, Bangladesh (TIB) expressed its grave concern over 'rampant attacks on and harassment of' the opposition party candidates, contesting in the 11th general election due on December 30.
The organisation, in a statement on Tuesday, also criticised Election Commission (EC) for its inaction to this effect.
TIB also drew EC's attention towards the opposition candidates facing 'various barriers and repression' in conducting their electoral campaigns, and filing of cases against them ahead of the general election.
The independent watchdog also expressed worry over the 'self-contradictory' stance of EC in barring live media streaming from election centres and use of cell-phone there.
TIB observed that these steps would further decrease people's confidence on the country's election conducting body.
It urged EC to take steps in accordance with the country's constitution, and play its due role with self respect and courage to hold a credible election.
"Since the beginning of election campaigning, opposition candidates are being attacked, sued, intimidated and harassed," TIB Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman mentioned in the statement.
EC's inaction and indifference in dealing with the situation is raising worries, he further said.
"The opposition candidates are not only being harassed and oppressed by the ruling party members, but policemen are also playing a discriminatory role against the opposition candidates."
Instead of taking strong steps in controlling these incidents, EC is maintaining silence, which is shameful and unexpected from such a constitutional institution.
EC is yet to be successful in ensuring a level-playing field for all, he added.
TIB also urged EC to ensure a congenial environment for media personnel, so that they can work independently and uninterruptedly during the election.
In order to ensure it, TIB urged EC to provide a guideline for media by taking suggestions from the authorities concerned.
