Three get death over Keraniganj businessman murder

Seven others get life in prison

A court in Dhaka has awarded death penalty to three people in a case filed over killing a businessman for extortion in Keraniganj in 2006.

The condemned convicts are Maruf Hossain, 24; Titu, 21; and Liton, 20.

The court on Sunday also sentenced seven other accused to life imprisonment.

The lifers are Amzad Hossain Liton, 21; Sabbir, 22; Abdul Goni, 22; Wasim Kasai, 25; Samrat, 30; Nantu, 20; and Nabab, 31.

Of them, Titu, Liton, Samrat and Nabab were present in the dock when the verdict was pronounced.

According to the prosecution, the convicts shot Bachchu Miah to death at Jinjira of Keraniganj on June 18, 2006 over an extortion of Tk 2 million.

Victim's brother Matiur Rahman had filed a case against 11 people over the incident.

Of the accused, 'Dakat' Shaheed was killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in 2012.
