Sharp decline in number of prisoners in last 21 days

The number of prisoners in the country saw a sharp decline in the last 21 days.

As on January 18, the number of inmates was 92, 845 which declined to 87, 473 in February 8, 2019, according to the data provided by the Prisons Directorate under the Ministry of Home Affairs on Friday.

Of the total number of prisoners, 16,128 are convicts and the rest 71,345 remain under trials, the data showed, adding that the number of female prisoners is only 3,272.

There are 68 jails all over the country with 40,664 inmates, of which 38,745 are men and 1,919 are women.
