Rural post offices to turn into service centres by 2023

The post offices located in rural areas will turn into service centres to provide various digital and financial services to the marginal people.

Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar gave the information in the parliament on Tuesday, reports BSS.

Jabbar said Bangladesh Post Office in association with Teletalk and the state-run Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) has taken the initiative to turn the post offices into service centres in the rural areas.

"The initiative is expected to be completed by 2023," he said.

Bangladesh Post Office has taken the mega plan to implement the election manifesto of the present government – Amar Gram Amar Shahar – announced ahead of the 2018 general elections, he said.

The telecommunications minister said process is underway in three post offices of Panchagarh district to establish those as service centres.

After full implementation of the mega plan, he said, call centres would be set up at the rural post offices by giving telephone and mobile phone connections.

Jabbar said telephone exchanges of the BTCL have already been set up at all upazilas except some new upazilas.

"The government also installed optical fibre of the BTCL in 343 upazilas and 1,216 union parishads," he added.
