RU professor Rezaul Karim murder verdict May 8

A Rajshahi court on Wednesday set May 8 to deliver its verdict in connection with the killing of Rajshahi University teacher Prof Rezaul Karim Siddiquee in 2016.

Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Shirin Kabita Akhtar passed the order after concluding the hearings on behalf of both sides in the afternoon.

The court recorded the testimonies of a total of 32 witnesses in the case, reports UNB.

On November 6, 2016, police pressed charges against eight members of banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) in the case more than six months after the killing.

The accused are Khairul Alam Badal, Osman, Nazrul Islam, Shariful Islam, Ripon, Abdus Sattar, Rahmatullah and Maskawat.

Of them, Badal, Nazrul and Osman were killed in gunfights with police at different times and Shariful has been on the run.

Prof Rezaul Karim, 58, of RU English Department, was killed by miscreants in the city's Shalbagan area while he was waiting for university bus on April 23, 2011.

The victim's son Sourov Hossain filed a murder case with Boalia police station.
 

Teachers, students and employees had been staging demonstrations on the campus demanding justice for the killing of the RU teacher.
