A rape suspect has been killed in an alleged shootout with police at Hatiber village in Bhaluka upazila of Mymensingh district.
The incident took place at the village of Uthura in the early hours of Tuesday, said Md Myne Uddin, officer in charge of Bhaluka Model Police Station.
The dead Saiful Islam, 40, was accused in a case started in June over the rape of a schoolgirl, reports bdnews24.com.
According to the OC, a police team from Bhaluka Model Police Station arrived at Hatiber village after receiving news about ‘a group of robbers’ occupying an area beside the road.
“When police reached the spot, the robbers opened fire on them forcing police to retaliate. At one point, Saiful got hit and his associates fled the area,” said the OC.
The bullet-ridden body of Saiful was taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead, the OC added.
Four police personnel were also injured in the event, he said.
