Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia believes the attackers who vandalised the residence of the Dhaka University vice chancellor’s residence during the quota reform protests were professionals.
The police official made the remark during a press conference on Thursday arranged and spoke on various aspects of the quota reform protests.
The attack on the VC’s residence came early on Monday following the clashes between police, the Bangladesh Chhatra League and quota reform protesters.
“The anarchic incidents at the VC’s residence and the university area were abrupt and unexpected. The scale of the vandalism at the VC’s home and the way the CCTV hard disks were stolen indicate that the professionals were involved.”
Eyewitnesses say nearly 500 youths were present during the incident. They broke through the gate to get inside. Many were wearing masks.
The windows of the two-storey residence, the furniture and nearly every other breakable thing were vandalised. The CCTV cameras were broken.
The following day at a press conference, VC Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman said the attackers were out for blood.
The quota protesters claimed that ‘outsiders’ were responsible for the attack and that it had nothing to do with the protests.
A case has been filed over the attack on the residence.
“Be assured we are moving quickly to catch the perpetrators,” said Mia.
“No one is above the law. Whoever was involved with such heinous incident will be brought to justice. No one can put the security of the people at risk. They will not get away with it now.”
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had condemned the attack on the vice chancellor’s residence on Wednesday and called for immediate action against the perpetrators, reports bdnews24.com
