President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of veteran lawyer and former attorney general Barrister Rafique-ul Huq.

In a condolence message on Saturday, the premier said, “Barrister Rafique-ul-Huq used to give advice on important issues regarding the Constitution.”

The prime minister recalled Barrister Rafique’s role with due gratitude as he came forward to fight a legal battle to make her released from the jail following her arrest in 2007 by the then caretaker government in a false case.

She prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed sympathy to the bereaved family members, reports BSS.

In separate messages, the President said Barrister Rafique has made a huge contribution to establishing the rule of law in the country.

“Bangladesh has lost an eminent lawyer at his death,” added Abdul Hamid, now on an 11-day medical checkup in Dubai of the United Arab Emirates since October 14.

The head of the state prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.

Barrister Rafique-ul Huq breathed his last at 8:30 am today due to old age complications at the age of 85.

He had been undergoing treatment at Ad-Din Hospital in Dhaka with urinary tract infection and anemia problems since October 16.
