Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) would hold a rally on April 26 (Friday) to push for immediate release of detained party chairperson Khaleda Zia and other leaders and activists in front of the party's Nayapaltan central office in the capital.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir would attend the rally as the chief guest.

Dhaka south unit BNP will organise the event also demanding the release of its senior joint convener Nabi Ullah Nabi and joint convener Harun-or-Rasheed Harun.

Convener of Dhaka South BNP Abdus Salam would preside over the rally which will be moderated by its member secretary Rafiqul Alam Majnu.

The party announced the programme in a handout signed by member (acting) of Dhaka south BNP Saidur Rahman Mintu that was issued on Saturday.

It called upon the party leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies to attend the rally and make it a success.

Meanwhile, Senior Joint Secretary General of BNP Ruhul Kabir Rizvi alleged on Saturday that the government was working underhand against the country and the people.

"Awami League general secretary (also road transport and bridges minister) Obaidul Quader and foreign minister Hasan Mahmud said in their speeches that many things happen underneath. They (government) are doing work against the country and the people silently," he said.

Mr Rizvi made the comment when party chairperson's released adviser Habibur Rahman Habib called on him at the party's Nayapaltan headquarters.

He praised Habib for not yielding to the government's pressure and remaining steadfast on truth despite facing jail and oppression.

He said that there was a shortage of morale in today's politics and Habib has set a glittering example of maintaining morale and consistency with his words and acts.

Mr Rizvi further said that Mr Habib was among the then student leaders who played a leading role in toppling the then autocrat ruler Ershad in December 1990.
