Police raid at Mary Anderson sees 70 arrested with huge quantities of liquor

Police have arrested 70 people in possession of huge quantities of liquor during a raid at the Mary Anderson Floating Restaurant and Bar in Narayanganj.

The raid was conducted for one and a half hour from 8:30pm to 10:00pm on Monday, according to a Narayanganj District Police statement.

The seized liquor were 81 cartons of foreign beer with each carton containing 23 cans of beer, and four cartons of foreign wine with each carton having 10 cans of wine, the statement said.

Additional Superintendent of Police (DB) Subas Chandra, who led the raid, said they had launched the raid as part of an anti-drug drive.

During the raid, the authorities failed to show any valid papers, he said, adding that the drive will be going on in future.

The drive, conducted upon a tip-off, was directed by Superintendent of Police Mohammad Harun-Or-Rashid, the statement noted.

The luxury yacht-turned restaurant and bar, which was anchored on the Buriganga River at Pagla in Narayanganj's Fatulla during the raid, is operated by Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation.
