The target of completing the span placement work on Padma Bridge has been extended by five more months due to setbacks caused by the virus scare in assembling the spans, officials said.

Earlier, the Bangladesh Bridges Authority set the target to complete the placement of all 41 spans of 6.15-kilometre bridge by June.

In February, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said the target to complete the span placement work would not be hampered amid the coronavirus situation in China.

"We've now set the target for completion by the month of November," said bridges division secretary Mohammad Belayet Hossain.

He said the 31st span would be placed on Wednesday.

Mr Hossain, also the BBA executive director, said two more spans were ready for placement soon.

Project officials said they received all materials, excepting two spans. Three months were needed to complete the assembly work of each span.

According to the project office of Padma Multipurpose Bridge, span placement work suffered as shipment of two spans was halted due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
