Muslims in Bangladesh are celebrating their biggest religious festival, Eid-ul-Fitr, on Wednesday as Ramadan, the month of reflection and building bridges, has come to an end.

Millions of them have left Dhaka and Chattogram cities to share the celebrations with their loved ones at their homes in smaller cities, towns and villages.

Morning rains slightly disrupted Eid celebrations in Dhaka on Wednesday. Many walked through rains to the Eid congregations.

The Eid prayers at the National Eidgah were not disrupted due to bad weather as it  had a proper shade. The Eid prayers were held on schedule at 8.30am.

“Dhaka is likely to have rain from early morning to 10.00 am on Wednesday,” Senior Meteorologist Abdul Mannan said on Tuesday.

Dhaka and other parts of the country experienced rain on Wednesday morning.

The day of this year’s Eid was decided after much deliberation on Tuesday night.

Initially, the Moonsighting Committee said the Shawwal moon had not been sighted in the country.

However, it held a second meeting after reassessing the information and decided to celebrate the Eid on Wednesday.

In Dhaka, the main congregation was held at the National Eidgah on the High Court premises at 8:30am. President Abdul Hamid joined the Eid jamaat, news agencies reported.

This year, the Sholakia Eidgah in Kishoreganj and Gor-e-Shahid Boro Math in Dinajpur hosted the two largest Eid congregations.

The national flag has been hoisted atop government and non-government office buildings. The main city streets and road islands have been decorated.

Television channels and radio stations are airing special programmes on this occasion.

Special diet will be served in hospitals, jails, government children homes, centres for persons with disabilities, shelter homes, orphanages, vagrant welfare and destitute welfare centres.
