Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukder on Monday urged officials concerned to apply the electoral rules equally for all candidates in the upcoming general election.

“Free, fair and neutrality is an urgent for the election. You’ve to play a strong role in this regard,” he told a training programme arranged for the election officials at Nirbachan Bhaban in the city’s Agargaon area, reports BSS.

“The Election Commission (EC) does not want to defame itself by holding a controversial election. I also know that none of you will want to be part of this controversy,” the commissioner said.

Mahbub also called upon the election officials to work without any fear, saying “If you fail to do so, the election will fall flat. If you succeed, the nation will shine”.

Noting that about 1.0 to 1.2 million officials are involved in the election process, he said all of them have been given the highest authority to prevent irregularity and maintain law and order at the polling stations.

The EC will never tolerate any negligence of the election officials in performing their duties during the polls, the commissioner said.

“You’ve to build credibility and confidence among the people about the election so that the candidates can rely on you and the voters can exercise their franchise,” Mahbub said.

Senior officials of the EC and the Electoral Training Institute (ETI) were present in the programme where about 408 participants from 13 districts took part.
