Rejecting the 60 per cent bus fare hike, Jatri Kalyan Samity on Sunday also demanded to maintain the previous rate of bus fare.

“The government is unjustifiably accepting the transport owners’ demand of hiking the public road transport fare excluding passenger representative in the fare determining processing,” the organisation's secretary general Mozammel Haque said in the statement.

“This move will utterly neglect the interests of the passengers, further inciting fare anarchy and harassment of passengers in the sector, and the government decision will increase the suffering of the common people in the country”, he added.

The move of hiking fare was made without proper analysis and without giving a chance to passengers to bargain with the transport owners is tantamount to oppression of the helpless people, he went on continuing.

Besides, hiking fare by showing fake and unreasonable calculations is unjustifiable, so the passengers of the country will not accept this unreasonable fare increase in any way, he added.

Earlier, the Road Transport and Bridges Ministry on Sunday issued a circular increasing the fare to 60 per cent ‘temporarily’ in the time of pandemic citing maintain social distancing on board.

The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) on Saturday recommended an 80 per cent fare hike following the transport owners demanded a 100 per cent increase claiming that maintaining health guidance in public vehicles would force them to count loss.
