The Jatka (Hilsa fry) conservation week will be observed from March 10 to 16 in 37 Hilsa inhabited areas across the country with an aim to create awareness among the mass about preserving immature Hilsa or ‘Jatka’.

During the period, catching Hilsa fry will be counted as punishable offence as per the country’s law and order.

The decision came at a meeting at the Ministry of Fisheries And Livestock on Monday with the state minister of the ministry Md Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru in the chair.

Mobile courts will oversee the implementation of the week-long ban and conduct regular drives to stop catching, selling, and buying of Jatka.

The conservation week is observed every year in order to protect Hilsa and boost the production of the national fish.
