In Sri Lanka, Modi cites BD as example of political stability leading to economic gains

India Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while visiting Sri Lanka recently, has referred to Bangladesh as a classic example in South Asia of political stability leading to economic gains.

In a 10-minute talk with Sri Lanka's  Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa-led delegation, he did it driving home his point - how political stability had been fundamental to sustained economic development.

An opinion piece titled 'Modi cites Bangladesh as example of political stability leading to economic gains' and written by columnist Kelum Bandara on Thursday in Lankan newspaper Daily Mirror featured this.

Justifying Modi's observation, he pointed out Bangladesh's development on various fronts ad attributed those to the political stability prevailing since 2009.

"The success story of Bangladesh offers insight to Sri Lanka, " he added.

According to him, "unstable governance and lack of policy consistency hampered economic growth, discouraged Foreign Direct Investment and obstructed decision making [in Sri Lanka]."

Bangladesh has in recent years been lauded by leaders of governments and economists across the world for its economic gains.
