Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Sunday said Eid holidaymakers will enjoy their most comfortable journey this time.
Obaidul Quader came up with the remarks while talking to reporters after visiting the 2nd Meghna and the 2nd Gumti bridges that were opened to traffic recently to ease traffic on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway, reports UNB.
The minister said homebound people will be able to reach their homes in northern districts of the country without any hassle, too.
He, however, said inclement weather might slow down the traffic on highways.
Quader said sheds will be constructed by roads so that passengers can take rest.
He said 65 CCTV cameras will be installed on the two bridges to ensure passengers’ security.
The minister asked all concerned to ensure that there is no chaos on highways during the Eid rush.
Meanwhile, nearly a million more people moved out of the capital on Sunday for their native villages to celebrate the festival with their families in villages with 2-3 days left for the Eid-ul-Fitr.
Though vehicles were moving smoothly on major highways, three trains could not maintain their schedules again, causing sufferings to the holidaymakers.
Kamalapur Railway Station, major bus terminals and Sadarghat Ferry Terminal were crowded with the homebound people waiting for hours together to catch transports to reach their destinations.
Superintendent of Police (SP) of Highway (Gazipur) Md Shafiqul Islam said traffic on all the major highways was normal till the afternoon with vehicles moving smoothly.
There was no report of any tailback on Dhaka-Chattogram, Dhaka-Mymensingh, Dhaka-Sylhet and Dhaka-Tangail highways till filing of this report around 8pm, he said.
No major traffic chaos was reported from anywhere of the country till filing of the report around 9:30pm.
The Eid-ul-Fitr is scheduled to be celebrated in the country on June 5-6 depending on the sighting of the Shawwal moon.
