HC orders BRTA to increase number of vehicle fitness testing centres

The High Court (HC) on Wednesday ordered Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) to increase the number of vehicle fitness testing centres in the country within the next two months, reports BSS.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Md Khairul Alam passed the order after holding hearing on a rule issued in this regard.

The High Court on July 31, 2018, issued the rule, asking as to why it shall not pass order to stop plying of unfit vehicles and why the inaction of the defendants in monitoring and ensuring fitness of the vehicles shall not be declared illegal, after holding hearing on a writ filed in this regard.

The High Court had asked officials including home secretary, transport secretary and BRTA chairman to reply the rule.

Advocate Tanvir Ahmed, who moved the plea filed in this regard, said around four millions vehicles run on the roads across the country, but the number of testing centres to test the fitness of those vehicles, is inadequate.

“I had mentioned the matter before the court,” he said today.
