Govt working to identify infection-prone areas: Minister

Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives (LGRD) Minister Md Tazul Islam on Tuesday said an initiative has been taken to identify the areas with high infection rate to contain the spread of the deadly virus.

He made the disclosure in a video message over the implementation of the zone-wise lockdown method across the country, reports UNB.

“Arrangements were made to identify the areas that reported higher number of cases from coronavirus. Besides, the areas with less Covid-19 cases will be brought under restriction  so that the virus can’t infect people there,” he said.

Mentioning that all the sub-ordinate bodies of the ministry are working to implement the plan, Minister Tajul said each ward under the two Dhaka City Corporations will be divided into sub-zones to monitor the coronavirus situation closely.

Law enforcement agencies, government officials and public representatives are supposed to extend support to materialise the plan, he added.

Earlier on Saturday, State Minister for Public Administration Farhad Hossain disclosed that the government is planning to designate areas according to coloured zones - red, yellow and green, to stem the spread of coronavirus.

Different parameters have been set to separate the three and avoid arbitrary zoning. The areas with 30 infections per 100,000 of population will be marked as ‘Red Zones’, he said.

Bangladesh on Tuesday saw the highest number of single day new cases and deaths from coronavirus.

The health authorities announced detection of 3,117 new cases and 45 deaths in the span of 24 hours.

With this, the total number of confirmed cases surged to 71,675 while the death toll jumped to 975.
