Govt to sign contract soon to get Covid-19 vaccine: Health minister

Health Minister Zahid Maleque has said the government will sign a contract in the next 'two to four days' for getting the Covid-19 vaccine'.

“We are keeping close contact with the companies that are at the final stage of Covid-19 vaccine development and hopefully we will be able to sign an agreement shortly, in the next two to four days,” the minister said.

He came up with the statement while addressing at a food distribution function in Manikganj on Saturday, report BSS and UNB.

However, not everyone would get the vaccine at the same time. Some people (the elderly or vulnerable) would get it in the first phase and gradually as more supplies are secured, others would also get vaccinated, Maleque explained.

"But vaccine alone can’t prevent an epidemic; people must follow health guidelines and maintain social distance even after being vaccinated," he insisted.

“Bangladesh is successfully handling the Covid-19 pandemic through taking prompt preventive measures,” he said.

The function was addressed, among others, by Deputy Commissioner S M Ferdous, Advocate Golam Mohiuddin, Chairman, Manikganj District Red crescent Society, Israfil Hossain, General Secretary of the Society and A F M Sultanul Azam Khan Apel, Joint Secretary, Manikganj district Awami League.

About one thousand food and hygiene packages were distributed among the Covid-19 affected families at the function.
