Girl voters played a key role in electing the vice president and the social affairs secretary of Dhaka University Central Students Union, results analyses show.

Nurul Huq Nur and Akhter Hossain were recently elected to the posts of the DUCSU with 11,062 and 9,190 votes respectively.

Analysing the results of the DUCSU core committee election, local media reported that Nur's margin of votes with his nearest rival Rezawanul Huq Shovon, who bagged 9,129 votes, was 1,933.

At all five girls' halls, Nur got 3,487 votes, while Shovon 2,038, creating a big margin of 1, 449 votes between them.

As for Hossain, his margin of votes with his nearest contestant Azizul Huq, who received 8,018 votes, was 1,172.

From the girls' halls, Hossain got 3,072 votes, while Huq polled 1,334 votes, creating a gap of 1,738 votes between them.

Nur led the quota reformist panel that also includes Hossain, and Shovon headed the Sammilita Shikkharti Sangsad panel, of which Huq was part in the latest election.

Over 43,000 students were registered for electing 25 leaders of the DUCSU central committee and 13 each of 18 hall unions.

As many as 229 competed for 25 posts in the central union and 509 for 234 posts of the hall unions ( Each hall union has 13 posts).

All but two posts -- the VP and the social affairs secretary - went to the BCL panel in the central union.

The ruling Awami League's student wing won full panels in eight halls, but failed to follow suit in the girls' halls, except for Roquiyya Hall.

The recentt DUCSU election was held on March 11 after a gap of over 28 years.
