The Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD) has revealed that the losses caused by two recent spells of flood in the country have been estimated to be Tk 150.1 billion.

Crop losses, collapse of houses and fractures of roads, culverts, embankments and dams have brought a severe blow to above 12.87 million people in 38 districts, an assessment by the local think-tank showed on Thursday.

The study titled ‘Flood 2017: Assessing Damage and Post-flood Management’ was disclosed at a national level dialogue organised by CPD at the CIRDAP Auditorium in the city.

The study said a flash flood hit six districts in the Haor area during March-April and the second one occurred in August – thereby affecting 32 districts.

The flash flood caused an approximate loss of 1.53 million tonnes of rice worth Tk 53 billion in Boro season, it said.

Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud spoke on the occasion as the chief guest while distinguished fellow of CPD Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya chaired the programme.

Economist Dr M Asaduzzaman and former vice-chancellor of BRAC University Dr Ainun Nishat, among others, also spoke.
