First Navy chief Nurul Huq laid to rest

Captain Nurul Huq (retd), freedom fighter and the first chief of staff of Bangladesh Navy was laid to rest in the capital on Tuesday afternoon.

He breathed his last at around 7:20 pm on Monday at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka Cantonment.

Capt Huq was buried at the military graveyard in the city’s Banani following the namaz-e-janazah around 1:30 pm, briefly after Zuhr prayer at the Naval Headquarters mosque.

He joined the Mukti Bahini (Liberation Forces) in 1971 after retirement from the Pakistan Navy as Commodore in 1969.

After the liberation, he served as the country’s naval chief from April 07, 1972 to November 06, 1973.

He was also a former shipping minister and served as the chairman of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA).

Apart from his family, many well-wishers, friends, colleagues, relatives and admirers have been mourning his demise.
