Fakhrul briefs media after meetings that also discussed Rohingya issues

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia had separate meetings with USA and Canadian delegations on Monday.

During the talks with a Canadian parliamentary delegation, they told the BNP chief that their country wanted to see an inclusive and credible election in Bangladesh.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir revealed this after a six-member Canadian delegation, led by Yasmen Ratanski, MP, went to Khaleda's Gulshan office around 7pm on Monday and held nearly an hour-long meeting.

"Our discussions were very lively and fruitful. They (Canadian team) told us very clearly that their country wants to see a fair, neutral and acceptable election in Bangladesh with the participation of all parties," he said.

According to a UNB report, Fakhrul told journalists that they also discussed the country's latest political situation and Rohingya issue.

The Canadian parliamentary delegation arrived in the city recently to join the 63rd conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA).

Earlier in the morning, US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Thomas A Shannon called on the BNP Chairperson at her Gulshan Office.

During the 45-minute talks, Shannon discussed with her about the country's latest political situation, among other things.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir later told reporters that they mainly discussed the Rohingya issue and Bangladesh's latest political situation.

"We had elaborate and fruitful discussions on the issues."

Fakhrul, however, refrained from disclosing whether they discussed anything regarding the next general election.
