EVMs: EC to pick six seats by lottery

The Election Commission (EC) is scrutinising 48 parliamentary constituencies for the potential use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) on an experimental basis in the coming general election.

Six of these seats will be selected for EVM use by lottery, said Election Commission Public Relations Joint Secretary SM Asaduzzaman said on Sunday.

The machines are to be used for the general election for the first time over the objections of the BNP and most of the other parties. The EC decided the six seats will be from urban areas on Saturday.

According to EC officials, the chief election commissioner, election commissioners, the EC secretary and other relevant officials have selected 48 seats that are eligible.

The six seats will then be selected by random sampling.

Though the seats are to be chosen by November 28, the lottery will be held on Monday.

Asaduzzaman was quoted by bdnews24.com as saying, “The random sampling will be done at the EC conference room in the presence of the media at 5pm on Monday.”

CEC KM Nurul Huda, election commissioners Mahbub Talukder, Rafiqul Islam, Kabita Khanam and Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury and EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed will be present at the event.
