EC orders social media monitoring round-the-clock

The Election Commission has asked the authorities concerned to monitor the social media round-the-clock to check the propaganda and rumours ahead of forthcoming national election.

The commission gave the directives at a meeting with representatives of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) and National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre (NTMC) and top officials of mobile phone operators in the Nirbachan Bhaban on Monday.

EC Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed informed the directives to the reporters after the meeting, reports UNB.

"We have asked the authorities concerned to monitor propaganda and rumours on the social media round-the-clock," the secretary said.

He said the commission also asked them to take legal actions as per the existing laws against those will spread propaganda and rumours through social media.
