DMP chief rules out possibility of unpleasant incident during Durga Puja

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam on Saturday said there is no possibility of any untoward incident surrounding ‘Durga Puja’ festivals.

“We have talked to the Hindu community leaders . . . They all expressed their satisfaction with the security measures centering the Puja festivals,” he said.

The DMP commissioner came up with the statement while addressing the media after visiting several city puja mandaps, including the Dhakeshwari Temple, Siddheswari Kali Mandir, Ramakrishna Mission Puja Mandap and Dhakeswari Mandir Puja Mandap in Dhaka, reports BSS.

About the strengthened security measures in and around the puja mandaps and temples, the commissioner said that Hindus are spontaneously celebrating their puja amid security.

The DMP chief called for maintaining social distancing in the puja mandaps for the safety of senior citizens in view of the outbreak of the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Replying to a query of journalists, he said, “A quarter is spreading rumour and falsehood through social media, but the mass people have no link with it all.”

Senior police officials accompanied the DMP commissioner during the visit.
