Youth shot dead by Indian locals along Sylhet border

A Bangladeshi youth was shot dead Tuesday allegedly by members of the Indian indigenous Khasia community near the border in Jaintapur upazila of Sylhet.

The deceased was identified as Moqbul Ali, 28, a resident of Jhingabari village of the upazila.

The incident happened around noon today at upazila’s Dibir Haor area of Kendribil border.

According to locals, a group of smugglers entered India today early morning through the Kendribil border. While returning at noon, local Khashia people from India opened fire on them and Moqbul got killed.

Moqbul’s associates left his dead body at the zero point and fled, said the locals.

Jaintapur model police station’s Officer-in-Charge, Golam Dastagir said a youth has been killed by Khashia people in India, and his body was sent for an autopsy.

Border Guard Bangladesh Sylhet 48 battalion Commander Ahmed Yousuf Jamil said the group had crossed the Indian border to collect logs deceiving the eyes of BGB.

As the locals chased and shot bullets at them while returning, Moqbul got killed, he said.

According to locals, smuggling incidents through the border has increased as Bangladesh has recently shut the border with India for 14 days, reports UNB.
