Rangpur cultivators get good papaya yield this season

RANGPUR, June 24: The papaya cultivators under the district have become ecstatic as they are getting good yield of their produce during this year.

A good number of growers said with the hope to make a handsome profit they cultivated papaya in recent times.

The growers failed to make satisfactory profit from farming of potato and some other crops.

Their efforts proved successful as they have already witnessed a good output of their produce and also earned handsome profit as well, growers further said.

While visiting different areas of the district this correspondent saw farmers busy taking care of their papaya fields. Many were found harvesting their produces.

Nur Alam, a papaya grower of Balapara village of Haridevpur union under Rangpur Sadar said he cultivated papaya on one bigha (50 decimals) of land.

He has around 600 papaya plants in his papaya field. He has already earned over Tk 80,000 by selling his produce during last four months and is expecting to earn more profit during the rest of the time.

Delwar hossain, another cultivator of Hamidpur village under Mithapukur upazila said he has already earned Tk 25,000 by growing papaya on his 30 decimals of land.

He said at the initial stage of harvesting he made huge profit from the vegetable this year which will encourage him to expand its farming next year, he added.

A good number of farmers of the region have changed their financial condition by papaya farming as its farming has proved lucrative in recent years, sources said.

Presently, different kitchen markets of the region are overflowing with huge quantities of vegetables including papaya. The quantity is on the rise as there has been a bumper production of the vegetable this year, said Asadul, a wholesaler at Rangpur City Bazar.

According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Rangpur official sources the soil of many areas in the district is very much suitable for vegetable cultivation.

Farmers have been also earning good profit from cultivation of different varieties of vegetables including papaya in recent years.

Growers are given necessary advices and assistances by the DAE officials in this regard, sources added.
