GAIBANDHA/ PABNA, Apr 21: Public life has become miserable for a sultry heatwave that has been sweeping the country in the last few days.

Amid the soaring heat, people crowd sherbet shops in different places to quench their thirst.

Moreover, load-shedding has started in the district in phases, leaving people in utter miseries.

Gaibandha has experienced 36-38 degrees Celsius temperature in the last few days, which is the highest in Rangpur division.

Day labourers are unable to leave their homes. Many people take shelter under trees to get relief from the scorching heat.

People, including children, run to sherbet and other drink shops to quench their thirst.Common people, including the elderly and ailing ones, also suffer much for frequent load-shedding.

Doctors say that there is a risk of heatstroke amid the sultry summer.

Therefore, they advise people not to go out of their homes.

Auto-van driver Abdur Rashid of old Badiyakhali area said they are very exhausted while driving vehicles amid the severe heatwave. "Still, I am driving the vehicle for living."

Sugarcane juice is being sold in different places in the district.

Each glass of sugarcane juice is sold at Tk 10-29. Its demand has increased manyfold amid the heatwave," a vendor says.

Our Correspondent from Pabna reports, that a 60-year-old man died from heatstroke in the district town on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Sukumar Das, 62, of Zakir Mor of Shalgaria in the town.

The country's highest temperature of 41.6 degrees Celsius was recorded in Pabna on the day.

Sukumar Das fell sick while having tea at a teashop on Rupkatha Road in Pabna town.

Locals took him to Pabna General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Zahidul Islam, resident medical officer of the hospital, said that Sukumar died of heatstroke.

Local people are suffering from the severe heatwave in the district.

UNB from Meherpur adds, a 45-year-old housewife died reportedly from heat stroke in Meherpur's Gangni upazila on Sunday morning as the country continues to experience extremely high temperature for the past few days.

The deceased was identified as Shilpi Khatun, wife of Abu Taher of Ruyerkandi village in the upazila.

Her son Rawnak Hossain said his mother suddenly felt sick while working on the house yard amid the scorching heat in the morning though she was in good health.

She breathed her last while preparations were being made to take her to hospital, he said.
