BOGRA, Sept 05: Sugarcane growers are getting good production and fair market price in this season due to favourable weather condition in this current season.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has set a target to bring some 136 hectares of land under sugarcane cultivation in this season but the farmers have exceeded target as they have brought some 173 hectares of land aiming bumper production. The farmers of the districts have already started harvesting the crops with enthusiasm as the market price of the crops is very satisfactory, DAE added.
"I have taken two bighas of land under the crops cultivation in this current season spending Tk 9,300 but I took one bigha of land previous year," said farmer Shafiqul Islam, 45, under Shinganj upazila of the district. He again said, "I will bring more cropland under the crops cultivation coming season if I can make a good profit in this season."
"To motivate the poor and marginal farmers of the twelve upazilas of the district, we have taken expand enterprise to increase production", said sub-assistance agriculture officer Azizur Rahman of Bogra.
The kitchen markets of the district are flooded with the sugarcane supply from the middle of August. The customers purchase the crops for their children easily as the shopkeeper sit beside the road. Each hali (four pieces) of the crop is being sold from Tk 40 to Tk 60 in the retail market while Tk 30 to Tk 40 in the wholesale markets.
While visiting the correspondent found the farmers harvesting the crops defying the adverse weather condition hoping for being self-reliant across the district. They are sending the crops to Joypurhat sugar mill mitigating the local demand. The farmers are getting Tk 1000 to Tk 1200 for each hundred of the crops.
Deputy Director of DAE Protul Chandra Sarker said, "We have arranged a short term training season for the growers of the crops during the time of plantation. The farmers are getting good profit from the crop land."
