Conviction rate in graft cases drops in January-April

The conviction rate in graft cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) dropped in the first four months of the current calendar year compared to that of the same period of 2018.

The conviction rate dropped by 2.42 per cent to 61.96 per cent during the January-April period this year from 64.38 per cent during the same period of previous year, according to the ACC data.

The conviction rate in the graft cases lodged by the anti-graft watchdog also fell last year after a steady rise in the previous three years.

The punishment rate came down to 60.64 per cent last year from 67.93 per cent in 2017. It was 54.20 per cent in 2016 and 37 per cent in 2015, according to the ACC sources.

Some 2,834 graft cases were under trial while 285 cases stayed by the High Court (HC) and 57 people were convicted in the first four months of this year.

Besides, 35 people were acquitted and 92 cases disposed of during the same period, the ACC data showed.
