Seven more people died of the novel coronavirus disease, or COVID-19, in Bangladesh in the 24 hours to 8:00am on Tuesday, raising the tally to 46.

Moreover, 209 others were diagnosed with COVID-19 during the same period, taking the number of such cases in the country to 1012, said Prof Dr Nasima Sultana, additional director general of the Directorate General (Administration) of Health Services (DGHS), while briefing the media live at 2:30pm.

Both the new deaths and cases reported are the single-day highest since Bangladesh respectively reported its known COVID-19 cases on March 07 and its first death from the disease on March 18.

The fresh coronavirus infections were found after testing 1905 samples, of which 1804 were collected during the above-mentioned-24-hour period itself and the rest 101 during the previous 24-hour spell.

Globally, as of Tuesday afternoon a total of 119,732 people died and 452,614 recovered from the virus disease, according to worldometer.info, a website that provides real-time updates.

Including both the dead and recovered, a total of 1,926,305 have so far infected by the virus, the website data shows.

Again, of 1,353,959 people who are currently infected, 1,302,808 (96 per cent) are in mild condition and the rest 51,151 (4.0 per cent) in serious condition, it adds.

The novel coronavirus disease was first reported in China in December last year.

As the COVID-19 began sweeping across the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared it a pandemic on March 11 this year.

The deadly viral disease has so far infected a total of 210 countries and territories and two international cruise ships around the world.
