BD sees highest single-day rise in Covid-19 deaths, cases

Bangladesh on Tuesday witnessed its highest single-day rise in both Covid-19 deaths and cases.

A total of 45 people died of the deadly respiratory disease in the last 24 hours to 8:00am today, the health directorate said.

With the latest, the death toll from Covid-19 now stands at 975 in the country.

Meanwhile, 3,171 more people tested positive for coronavirus, pushing the total number of cases in the country to 71,675.

Nasima Sultana, additional director general (admin) at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), disclosed the information while briefing the media live on the daily Covid-19 bulletin at 2:30pm.

Among the new fatalities, 33 are male and the rest are female.

The fresh coronavirus infections were found after testing 14, 664 samples in 55 authorised labs across the country, she said.

Besides, the recovery count also jumped to 15,336 after 777 patients were discharged from hospitals during the period under review.

Bangladesh reported the first cases of coronavirus on March 08 and the first death 10 days later on March 18.

In an effort to contain the virus, the whole country was put on lockdown for more than two months, but the pandemic is showing no sign of slowing down.

Meanwhile, the global death toll from coronavirus has reached 408,975 as of Tuesday noon.

It has so far infected 7,210,196 people around the world, according to Worldometer - a website that provides real-time updates.

Of them, 3,250,662 are currently being treated with 53,788 remain in serious or critical condition.

So far, 3,550,559 people have recovered.

The novel coronavirus disease was first reported in China in December last year.

As the Covid-19 began sweeping across the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared it a pandemic on March 11 this year.
