BD records 2275 new Covid-19 cases, death toll crosses 2900-mark

DGHS reports 54 more fatalities, 2275 fresh cases

The death toll from coronavirus (Covid-19) in Bangladesh crossed 2900 mark on Sunday, 141st day of the virus outbreak in the country.

Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reported 54 deaths and 2275 new cases from the virus in the 24 hours to 8:00 am today.

With the latest, the country’s number of the virus infections now stands at 2,23,453 people, said the DGHS at a virtual press briefing today.

With the new deaths, the country’s total deaths reach to 2928, according to the state-run DGHS.

Additional Director General (administration) Prof Dr Nasima Sultana said a total of 10,078 tests had been done at 81 labs across the country during the reporting period.

The new tests take the tally of diagnosis to 1,111,558 in the country, she said.

"Some 1,792 victims have recovered from the disease bringing the total figure to 123,882," she said.

Among the fatalities, 40 are male and 14 are female, Ms Sultana said, adding that one was between 21-30 years old, three were between 31-40, eight between 41-50, fifteen between 51-60, seventeen between 61-70, seven between 71-80 and three were between 81-90 years old.

Nineteen were from Dhaka division, ten from Chattogram, eight from Khulna, seven from Rajshahi, six from Sylhet, three from Rangpur, and one from Barisal division.

Of them, forty-eight died in hospitals and six died in their homes, she added.

According to the state-run Directorate General of Health Services, 58,799 people now remain in both home and institutional quarantine while 19,132 others in isolation.

On Saturday, 38 people died and 2,520 people tested positive for the highly infectious disease. 

Neighbouring India tops the list of total cases in the continent with 1,389,170 cases, followed by Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey until Thursday 3:06 pm, according to Worldometer data.

As per the global list, Bangladesh is following Turkey that has reported 225,173 cases so far while Columbia is one step behind the south Asian nation with 240,795 cases.

So far over 16,219,581 people have been infected in globally with the deadly virus which originated in China in December last year. Of them, 648,730 people died from coronavirus.

Of the infected, 5,648,833 are currently being treated while 66,178 of them are in serious or critical condition, the website data shows.
