BD, Korea discuss enhancing cyber security to realise Digital Bangladesh

Bangladesh, on Thursday, discussed ways with South Korea to enhance cyber security to realise Digital Bangladesh goals.  

To this end, a seminar titled ‘Enhancing Cyber Security for Digital Bangladesh’ was held in the city at the CID headquarters, as per a report on UNB.

Bangladesh Police, Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Korea National Police, Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and KOICA Bangladesh Alumni Association (KBAA) jointly hosted the seminar.

Md. Shafiqul Islam, bpm (Bar), Addl. Inspector General of CID, Joe Hyun-Gue, Country Director of KOICA Bangladesh Office and Lee Woo Chae, Chief Inspector, Korea National Police and Ataul Haq, Advisor KAAB  were, among others, present.

Chae covered a wide range of topics in the seminar, such as, policies of cybercrime investigation, responsiveness for conventional crimes and strengthening future cooperation in cybercrime investigation between Bangladesh and Korea.

He highlighted the urgency to address the need for actionable online cybercrime reporting system, tactical tools for cybercrime intelligence, enhanced cyber security planning, etc. to strengthen practical strategies related to cybercrimes.

The participants in the seminar observed that new communication system and digital technology have made massive changes in daily lives in recent times and cybercrime has been one of the fastest growing areas of crime with the rise of internet usage in Bangladesh.

Cases such as central and private bank hacking, cyber-financial frauds, cyber money-laundering, etc. are few of the most common cyber related crimes that are accelerating in the country leading to cybercrimes being reported every day, according to a media release issued by KOICA.

KOICA in cooperation with Bangladesh Police has been supporting Bangladesh Police, CID through its bilateral projects and fellowship programs to develop capacity building plan for cybercrime investigation and create strategic mechanisms.

The occasion came to an end with KOICA’s Country Director ensuring Korea’s continued cooperation to enhance abilities for effective international cooperation cybercrime in Bangladesh in the coming years ahead.
