Bangladesh records 1,764 new coronavirus cases, 28 more deaths

Bangladesh confirmed 1,764 new coronavirus infections on Saturday, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 44,608.

Meanwhile, 28 more people died of the lethal disease in the last 24 hours to 8:00am. With the latest, the death toll from COVID-19 now stands at 610.

Among the fatalities, 25 were male and the rest were female.

Nasima Sultana, additional director general (admin) at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), disclosed the information while briefing the media live on the daily COVID-19 bulletin at 2:30pm.

The fresh coronavirus infections were found after testing 9,987 samples in the 24-hour period, she said.

Besides, the recovery count also jumped to 9,375 after 360 patients were discharged from hospitals during the period under review.

Bangladesh reported the first cases of coronavirus on March 08 and the first death 10 days later on March 18.

In an effort to contain the virus, the government has enforced a countrywide shutdown since March 26 but numbers of new cases continue to increase.

The global death toll from coronavirus has reached 367,116 as of Saturday noon.

There have been 6,045,653 confirmed cases around the world after the highly contagious disease was first reported in China in December last, according to worldometer, a website that provides real-time updates.

Of those infected, 3,007,097 are currently undergoing treatment with 53,754 being in serious or critical condition.

As the virus began sweeping across the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus crisis a pandemic on March 11.
