A nurse of Kurmitola General Hospital, Runu Veronica Costa, has received the first COVID vaccine shot in Bangladesh as part of the country’s mass immunisation campaign.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the much-anticipated vaccination programme through a videoconference on Wednesday, reports bdnews24.com.
Prof Nasima Sultana, additional director general of Health Services, Dr Ahmed Lutful Moben of Kurmitola General Hospital, Md Didarul Islam, a member of traffic police’s Motijheel unit, and Brigadier General M Imran Hamid of Bangladesh Army were next in line to be inoculated.
According to BSS, some 20-25 frontline COVID-19 fighters, including physicians, nurses, health workers, members of law enforcement agencies and army and journalists, will be inoculated on the first day.
The vaccine receivers will be observed for seven days. After the end of their seven-observation, other listed people will be vaccinated during the nationwide vaccination campaign.
The online registration for possible recipients of the inoculation has also started, said PMO Secretary Md Tofazzel Hossain Miah while conducting the event, reports UNB.
Anyone can get registered to take vaccine through visiting www.suokkha.gov.bd, he said.
Now, the vaccination programme will initially be conducted at five centres in the capital and then the nationwide inoculation will start in early February.
