All programmes centring on the Pahela Baishakh will be cancelled due to the coronavirus situation in the country, prime minister Sheikh Hasina has said.
In a video conference with all 64 deputy commissioners this day, or Tuesday, morning, she suggested celebrating the festival digitally avoiding any public programmes on the occasion.
Expressing sadness about deciding so this time, Hasina said, “It is painful to cancel the Pahela Baishakh programmes but we will have to do this in the public interest.”
She asked people not to heed any rumours.
The prime minister attended the conference from her official residence Gono Bhaban in the capital at 10:00am.
