The Election Commission (EC) has given approval to 53 nominees to contest in the forthcoming national election after they submitted their appeal.
Earlier, on December 2, retuning officers cancelled nomination application of 786 aspirants after scrutiny, as per media reports.
The Election Commission held a hearing on Thursday to settle the appeals of the first 100 nominees to challenge the rejection of their applications.
Out of which, the rejections of 53 nominees have been overturned, allowing them to compete in the polls. Most of them are BNP candidates.
According to a bdnews24.com report, the EC has rejected 42 appeals while three others were left pending and two appeals were not heard due to the absence of the candidates.
The hearing began at 10am on the 11th floor of the Election Commission building. Among the 543 appeals filed, 160 are due to be settled on the first day.
Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda, Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukder, Rafiqul Islam, Kabita Khanam and Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury headed the hearing.
Patuakhali-3 BNP candidate Golam Maula Rony is among the nominees who have received approval to compete in the polls.
The Ex-Awami League turned BNP candidate’s nomination papers got rejected on Dec 2 by the returning officers for not having his signature on the affidavit.
