In the last 24 hours until Thursday morning, 198 new dengue patients were admitted to different hospitals across the country.

Fifty-seven of them were hospitalised in Dhaka, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said in a regular update.

Bangladesh was hit by a massive outbreak of the mosquito-borne disease this year. The large number of patients overwhelmed the country’s medical services.

Since January, 97,391 people were hospitalised with dengue. Of them, 96,388 made full recovery.

Currently, 752 patients, including 303 in the capital, are undergoing treatment at different hospitals, says a news agency report.

The Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research has received 251 reports of dengue-related deaths. It has reviewed 179 of them and confirmed 112 deaths.

The global incidence of dengue has grown dramatically, putting about half of the world's population at risk, the WHO says.

Severe dengue is a leading cause of serious illness and death among children and adults in some Asian and Latin American countries.

There is no specific treatment for dengue or severe dengue but early detection and access to proper medical care lowers fatality rates below 1 per cent.
