19 veterinary medical teams for city cattle markets

As many as 19 veterinary medical teams will be deployed in the cattle markets in both the south and north city corporations (DSCC and DNCC) this year to prevent entrance of sick animals.

The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock formed 1,213 veterinary medical teams for the cattle makeshift markets across the country this year, a ministry release said.

The veterinary teams will examine all cattle before entry of the animals to the markets.

Meanwhile, 18 veterinary medical teams have been formed for the 18 makeshift markets in Dhaka city of which DSCC comprises 11 teams. Another medical team with veterinary specialists will also work in the capital.

Besides, eight monitoring teams have also been assigned to monitor work of the medical teams.

The veterinary medical teams and mobile teams will be employed at all the cattle markets across the country who will carry out intensive monitoring to prevent sale of sick animals, said Department of Livestock Services (DLS) Director General Dr Abdul Zabbar Sikder.

He said the teams will prevent entry of any cattle infected with harmful germs like viruses, bacterial, parasites, and fungi.

Mr Sikder said cattle farms will also be inspected and after inspection, officials will provide health certificates.

However, mobile teams will also ensure physical distance of people in the markets during this pandemic.

According to DLS, the supply of locally-reared cattle is 11.9 million this Eid against demand of 11 million.

Of the animals, 25 per cent is expected to be brought to makeshift markets in Dhaka.
