The country for the first time in its history has attained self-sufficiency in fish and meat production.

The fisheries ministry sources say the fish production target for 2016-17 was set at 4.05 million tones whereas the year-end production reached 4.13 million tones.

This resulted in a surplus of 84,000 metric tonnes of fishes, the ministry data revealed.

The yield was 53 per cent higher than that of 2008-09, says bdnews24.

Meanwhile, production of meat in fiscal 2016-17 stood at 7.154 million tones – up from the target total of 7.135 million tonnes.

Fisheries and Livestock Minister Narayan Chandra Chanda revealed the information during a press conference at his secretariat office on Sunday.

“Forty-six years after independence, we have become self-sufficient in fish production,” the minister noted.

Bdnews24 quoted him as saying that the fish industry currently makes up 3.61 per cent of the country’s GDP while agriculture makes up 24.41 per cent, the minister added.
