Merchandise export earnings declined by 7.85pc in October

The country's single-month merchandise export earnings in October this year declined by 7.85 per cent to US$ 4.35 billion year-on-year mainly because of the economic slowdown in the European Union caused by the Russia-Ukraine war.

Bangladesh fetched $4.72 billion in October 2021.

The October'22 earnings also fell short of the target by 12.87 per cent, according to Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) data released on Wednesday.

The readymade garment (RMG) earnings, however, witnessed a 3.27 per cent growth in October’22 and earned US$3.67 billion.

The earnings from RMG exports after a robust growth during the last 13 months from August'21, declined about 7.52 per cent in September to $3.16 billion year-on-year.

The overall export earnings growth during July-October of the current fiscal year slowed down further by 7.01 per cent to $16.85 billion compared to $15.74 billion, the earnings in the corresponding period of the last fiscal.

Of the total $15.74 billion export income during the July-October period, the RMG sector fetched $13.95 billion, posting a 10.55 per cent growth over that of last fiscal.

A breakdown of the clothing-sector performance shows that the knitwear sub-sector of RMG earned $7.72 billion from exports, registering 7.14 per cent growth.

Earnings from woven garments export have amounted to $6.22 billion in the past two months, up by 15.08 per cent.
