The BNP has served show cause notices to 61 leaders for participating in the second phase of upazila parishad elections, going against the party’s decision to boycott the polls to the local bodies.
The show-caused BNP leaders have been asked to respond within 48 hours. If they fail to come up with satisfactory replies, they will be expelled.
Out of 61 defying leaders, 25 are vying for the post of upazila chairman, 20 for the post of vice-chairman and 16 for the position of female vice-chairman.
The show cause notices were issued through a letter signed by BNP's senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Thursday.
Earlier on April 15, in a meeting of the BNP's National Standing Committee, the party decided to boycott the upcoming upazila parishad elections.
The BNP has already expelled 80 grassroots leaders from the party for taking part in the first phase of the polls.
