Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) alleged on Friday that the government has failed to protect the country people's fundamental rights after the dummy election on January 7, 2024.

BNP Chairperson's Adviser Zainul Abdin Farroque made the allegation while talking to the media after offering fateha at the party founder late president Ziaur Rahman's grave at Sher-E-Bangla Nagar in the capital marking the 37th founding anniversary of Zia Parishad.

"The present political crisis is deepening day by day. The government is only verbally talking about democracy but in practice they haven't yet established democratic system in the country," he said.

He also said the election held on January 7, 2024 was not acceptable to all democratic countries in the world.

Regarding BNP's solidarity with the ongoing campaign to boycott Indian products, he said, "India has helped this government during the election (On January7, 2024). So, people have boycotted Indian products. BNP's solidarity to the present call to boycott Indian products will continue."

Mr Farroque also reiterated his party's demand for holding a fresh national election under a neutral caretaker government to protect the country's independence and sovereignty.

"Prices of all essential commodities have escalated now. The prices should be contained well so that people could purchase and consume essential commodities during the ongoing holy month of Ramadan," he continued.

Chairman of Zia Parishad Prof Abdul Quddus and its secretary general Dr Emtaz Hossain were present, among others.
