Sudden egg price rise makes  Bogura farmers happy

BOGURA, Feb 05: The sudden rise of egg price have made farmers happy in Bogura district as it has increased by Tk 4 to 5 for a hali (four pieces) within a couple of weeks.

Though egg producers are happy, the consumers are suffering. The prices of four pieces of eggs soared to Tk 36 to Tk 38 on Sunday at the district's retail markets from Tk 30 to Tk 32 earlier.

The low income group of people is the worst sufferers in twelve upazilas of the district as they mostly depend on egg instead of meat and fish for their protein intake.

A grocer at Bhanduria area under Dupchanchia upazila said he bought farm eggs at Tk 96 for a dozen from his regular supplier. He said the prices of egg started to surge with the onset of February following a considerable rise in demand.

Wholesaler Azim Uddin under Kahaloo upazila said demand for both farm poultry birds and eggs have increased amid significant rise of price of other protein items including beef, mutton and fish. 

He said the egg farm owners across the district are now selling their produce 100 eggs at Tk 850 to Tk 860 few days back but it is being sold at Tk 700 to Tk 750 for the last few days.

Statistics show good number of poultry farms shut down last year after they suffered losses in the last two years. As a result the supply of the food item has received a setback in the region. 

Farmer Mousumi Rani said she has 100 hens in her own tinshed farm and which lay40 to 50 eggs every day. She makes over Tk 1000 to 1200 every day selling the eggs, she added. 

District livestock official said they are giving all sort of necessary suggestions to the farmers to make the sector a profitable one.
